Adventures in China - Page 3

And so it was just my luck that once I finally figured everything all out, internet set up, ready to go. My laptop dies. In the midst of trying to put together a reel for my agents. My faithful laptop of several years finally crashed and the windows would not start up. I just got the C: reformatted and it's good to go once again!
The last week my roommate Darren finally came in and we picked up everything else we needed for the apartment. It is now very much set up, and feels much more like a home now. Darren has been great, he's been a model/actor in Asia for several years now but is from Vancouver as well. He loves to cook (cooks really well), which I'm awful at, so I wash the dishes and although we are very different in personality, it has been great synergy with our different strengths making up for each other's weakness for better living. Here's a link to his website if you wanna check him out.

For the last 4 days I've also had a major fever and a cold at the same time. Very uncomfortable, and was unable to sleep for much of it. The fever has passed, my cold's still here. It's good to have good friends, Darren and Chou Tao (silver medalist at the Beijing Olympics, Rhythmic Gymnastics) both helped me through it with anything I needed. Boiled coke and ginger is delicious and thanks to Darren for introducing that to me. My cold is just about to clear up, basically all better today already. And tomorrow I'll be finally able to get back to the gym for a light workout. We got gym memberships at a place across the street, 140 dollars for a year. Well worth it, we have so much time and little to do during Chinese New Years. I keep hearing that they'll be nothing going on. So I'm still debating whether or not I'll be going to Tian Jin to stay with some family. If not, I'll be sure to keep active and study.

I just figured out how to put pictures here! Here's one from my surprise farewell dinner. Hope everyone's doing great back home. I'll be sure to take more pictures now :)

Now that's I'm back online, I'll try to keep the updates coming as events unfold. One thing I didn't have time to put up was this short fight sequence me and my brother Owen did with, Tanay Ulgen. It was a very short and fun shoot. We did 2 rehearsals the week before and one day of shoot. The location was easy to work with and although the floor was very hard being concrete underneath the thin puzzle pieces, it went really well. The space is shared with cheerleaders next door and we had to wait 6 hours before we could start. The sound was way too loud, and we needed the dividers open to shoot in from their side. So after arriving at 3pm ready to go, we ended up going to dinner and electronics shopping with some friends before making our way back and starting at 9:30pm.
It was pouring rain as well and we were not warm at all but very determined to get going as we were all on a very tight schedule in the coming weeks and if we didn't do it this day it may not have happened at all. We shot all the way through till 5:30am, and although we were tired from the get go and cold for most of it, we found very little difficulty going from shot to shot and it moved very quickly. All in all, it was just another average day on set. Hehe, everyone working in film have been through much worst. We only had a one man crew to worry about. Anyways! here's the link. Feel free to comment, like it, view it, share it, etc.

Sorry for taking so long to write! I'm in Beijing now and everything is so different from what it was when I first came. The streets are cleaner, the sky is much clearer, and I even had a cab driver return 10 rmb for taking a wrong turn somewhere in a long trip where I fell asleep completely unaware! So different is this Beijing that it feels much like another city altogether. And although I live in a different neighbourhood, I have often visited the old Sports University.
So the first week was settling into the apartment, unpacking, and meeting up with some friends of my last visit. Knowing people mostly from the Beijing Sports University I came across many who now have Olympic medals. Weird to see so many people with medals in such short space of time (and not being at the Olympics itself or another event at a similar level). The food here is as good as ever, and can be as cheap or as pricey as you'd like to find it. And I quite enjoy the metro system, doubled in size since I was last here, which has been nice to sit and read while I ride across the city rather than having to try and have a cab driver understand what I'm saying! In time.. that won't be a problem. I'm reading Chinese books, I just bought a dozen Chinese films, all without English dubbing or subtitles (getting used to it).
Second week has been setting up the place. Buying household stuff and getting my internet set up (took awhile). I really hated the internet cafes, so I couldn't be there much longer than I needed to be to check my emails. The first thing you see is a non smoking sign but the place is a smoke place complete with ash trays and cigarettes for sale. Yay for hyprocrisy! This is one thing that's just as it was. I tried to go in the morning while they air the place out when the serious gamers start to leave.
I've also just met my agency and some of the people I'll be working with. I am a very big fan of Entourage, and that was my first impression walking into the place. It was like walking into Miller and Gold's (Agency in Entourage) but everything in Chinese, except for Ari Gold who remains American, but much much nicer and comfortable to be around. It was big, organized and clean. Several floors above a hooters restaurant (that's where the directions lead to). Desks and offices everywhere, much different than my agency back in Vancouver. My meeting with them went really well, I liked everyone I met almost instantly (hope it's mutual) and was somewhat amazed at some of the things I saw and what I was to expect. Probably shouldn't say too much, for reasons of their security and confidentiality, but I hope to be able to tell you more about what's to come soon!

The last weekend coming around I didn't expect anything. Just doing last errands, packing, making arrangements finally. I had said bye to a few of my friends already and Friday night, lured into an Earls restaurant upstairs I see a very large and uncoordinated group of my friends, some of which looked almost as surprised as I did because they missed the "surprise" yell. It was a very nice evening, and completely unexpected. Same thing the next morning, I was going to dim sum lunch with my parents and I thought an aunt or two. When I got there, my grandma, all 6 aunts and uncles were there too to wish me off. It was so touching to see them all so supportive of me. Love my family and friends.
Two days to go! Anticipation, excitment, nerves, all building up. I just want to finish this novel I'm reading so I don't have to lug another book around. We'll see if I will be able to.
January 15th, 2010
It's been a little hard the last few days. My grandpa passed away last Sunday and we were busy making preparations for his funeral before me and my older brother, Sebastian had to leave. My grandpa lived a long life, just short of 94, and he will be missed. RIP Wong Lau.
It's 4 days until I leave for China now. My mind is hectic, still figuring out where I'll be staying, what I'll be doing, etc. But things are slowly coming together as I need it to. So for now.. I'm just hoping for the best.
January 9th, 2010
So the trip is 10 days away! It's a little nerve racking, still don't have all details in check! AHHHHH. That's ok, things will turn out alright. Still have things to pack, still need to make arrangements. Will do that this coming week! Also have a stunt day to do some motion capture work this week. Can't say any details, but I'll let you all know when I can. It'll be fun :)
Also, as I've been telling people all this time. Facebook and twitter will probably be banned in China. And I'll probably be using my forums (linked on the navigation bar up there on the right) to talk to people about updates here, my trip, and anything else really! So everyone please register because I'll probably be posting logs as I go, specifically martial arts and acting related, other things too! So come join me!

I don't know much about DJing and mixes but my friend has put this together for a competition and it's quite awesome! Please help me support him by voting 5 stars for gameplan for invasion at the link below. His name is Sean, he's made this 40 min mix "evoke the perfect night on the town". So take a listen and go have a good time!

Last night we shot our short fight sequence titled, "The Battle III". The location was at Richmond Black Belt Academy and they share a gym with Panther's Cheerleading which is really awesome because they have the use of their spring floors. Unfortunately they were rehearsing at the time and the noise did not let us start the shooting till they were finished rehearsals. So we had a 6 hour delay and started our shoot at 9pm. I did get a chance to window shop some laptops and hang out with some friends that were in the area though so that was nice.
The shoot went pretty smoothly, although it went on till 5 in the morning. We got everything we needed although a lot of it probably was not as clean as it could have been. It was raining hard outside, cold, the floor was pretty hard so my joints were really feeling it after a few repetitive falls and jumps. But all in all a very fun shoot with my brother Owen. Directed by Tanay Ulgen. We may have reshoots next week, but by then I'll be nicely recovered. My entire body is so sore right now, I could barely get up. And the workout has made my cold even worst, this morning it has peaked. No more breathing out of the nose for awhile.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas! Happy shopping if you participated in Boxing Day or the week to come.
I was down in Seattle with my parents and brother, spent Christmas day with some family there and a Christmas dinner with some family friends. It was a very enjoyable trip, met some new people, quality time with my parents and some shopping on the way back. Picked up a few things to ready my trip to China in the coming month. It's starting to creep up on me again so I just hope that I'm able to make all the arrangements needed by that time!
I'm also told that facebook and possibly twitter is banned in China. If anything though I'll keep updating my site and post on the forums in my spare time!

Forum is launched!
I've had a lot of questions and comments about acting and martial arts so I have started a forum where people can ask questions, offer help, constructive critism, tips, and just about the world of film and television in general. I'll be trolling the boards and answering questions as well to give you the benefits of my experience, so hopefully this will be the start of a new little community!

My workout day. I have been inactive in training for awhile now doing only little exercises here and there to stay in shape. After today I will be sore for a week at least.
So the day starts out early, me and my brother Owen go to our Wushu Club, West Coast Chinese Martial Arts in Vancouver. We're there to look practice some choreography with a director/choreographer who's making a short battle scene between the two of us. So we spend a good two hours on that, nice easy pace, nothing too difficult.
Next we head over to a friend's Judo/Jujitsu class. It's a small gathering, practicing for fun. I have no formal training, and have little experience in what I do have. On top of that everyone was much larger than me. It was fun though. I got incredibly tired. One of the matches lasted for must have been over ten minutes. (Time limit is a good thing) I wasn't exactly sure though because I was so incredibly tired after that I couldn't think straight. Of course after that was done, there had to be one more with Owen, who's also very new. I could barely move my limbs at this point, but managed to hold him off till the class was over. He is freakishly strong now. Just getting his personal training certificate. He almost lives at the gym.
So I feel like I'm going to vomit at any moment, light headed, dizzy, all of that. Owen got called in to work last minute at another one of his odd jobs. All he has to do is unload a truck and gets paid the same no matter how fast/slow he does it. I volunteer to help him out, since he said it normally takes his 5 hours to do it alone. Figured if I helped it would be much faster. I had to take a 30 minute sit down before starting, to get my head on properly. After I felt much better, they had finished doing the preparations and we were staring at this enormous truck to be unloaded. It was different today because not only did he have to unload it, but he had to drive the boxes over to the warehouse with the power jack (super fun to drive btw). So we started moving, and I was tired before we even got started. But with the driving, it ended up taking us 5 hours between the both of us anyways. They were boxes of mandarin oranges, 12.26kgs each. There were 1100 boxes... 29669.2 pounds between the two of us. Needless to say I was completely exhausted by the end of it. It was a produce warehouse, of course I couldn't accept any money I was doing Owen a favour, but I did come out with two bunches of bananas for my mom. Haha, she loves fruit. And I like thinking that I moved close to 15 tonnes for a few bananas.

So it's been a fairly crazy week. I finally tied up all the loose ends of the move and am settled in Vancouver. At least for the time being, until I'm off to Beijing. Tentatively February 15. I applied for my Visa as well so I should have it sometime next week. I had two auditions which went really well. It's nice to see how things change as you build your credentials and experience so I'm happy for the opportunities I'm getting now.
I also did an interview with Ming Pao Newspaper Magazine at Granville Island Friday. It was a very enjoyable experience and if I can I'll link the article or scan it or something once it's up. I met with an action director to discuss doing a short battle sequence together. He saw my videos online and my films and offered me to fight in his latest "Battle" series. He was a cool guy, huge kung fu fan and we got along really well so I'll be looking forward to working with him shortly.
Today I went back to Ving Tsun class in the afternoon, have not been in so long. The kids that I used to teach there are now a foot taller than me and teaching the new generation. The class has grown a lot in numbers too but it retains the personal touch. It feels quite good to get back into it every now and then. My head instructor, Rodney Ng, was as sharp as ever, and someday I'll help continue his lineage along with others in my generation.
In the evening I went to my first wedding. Well not first, but if you don't include family it was the first of my close friends' wedding. It was a wonderful ceremony and as I hoped for, it was quite entertaining as many younger couples like to have their weddings. It was a modest gathering, with a few old friends from school and many old faces that I have not seen in years. It was a night filled with tears of joy and happy memories. I succumed to the urge of toasting my friend, and went off on a long story of our youths that was well received. There was dancing, a photobooth set up and everyone was enjoying themselves. It was everything I would have wanted at my own wedding.

Hey there, It's been a long week but after trip and trip with several cars and several more truck loads, I am almost moved out! If you have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm currently moving out of my house in Burnaby that I shared with 3 of my friends, I'm putting my stuff in my parent's house and heading off to Beijing next year. Tentative date right after Chinese New Years, that's February 15th. We got a trailer in yard and all we need to do is load the junk out and we'll be out. Oh and clean the house as well.
I've been getting hundreds of emails, facebook messages, and mail. Thank you to everyone who's taken the time to write me. I'm trying my best to respond to all of them while I still can. If I have not yet. I'm getting to it! Promise :)
I'm also going to get a forum set up here somewhere so I can post things where everyone can comment and give me feedback or brainstorm or what have you. And I'll be trying my best to keep this updated as much as I can. There is a project in development right now. But I can't say anything for the time being. Let you know soon enough :) thanks for reading.

There's a possibility of me moving to Beijing in 2010. Firstly for more opportunities for filming there as Vancouver will be basically shutting down for the Winter Olympics. Secondly to expand my Asian fanbase before going on to Los Angeles. And thirdly to learn Mandarin. It's been on the discussion table for a few weeks now and it's seeming more likely everyday. Still in talks and nothing super official, but I'll let you all know soon enough!

And Saturday is the day I spend on the "The Best Player" (double the!) set. I was out at the theatre late the night before but I found out that they were shooting 6 blocks away at the bowling alley and arcade! 8am wake up, get ready, 10 minute walk later and I'm there. Wonderful.
Although it was just a day, shoot and a very small part on this TV movie for Nickelodeon. It was quite enjoyable. The people were nice and it was at an arcade :) free games, yay! The other actors were cool to hang out and talk to, although I felt quite old being the 23 year old playing another high school role. But everyone was quite easy to relate to none the less.
Met a lot of nice people. One of which is Nathalie Heath, the dance choreographer for the dance sequence in the film. She's made it quite far last year in so you think you can dance, Canada, so I'm hoping she'll go all the way this coming year! Watch out for her, she's great, and I'm gonna help her with some of the Wushu acrobatics and tricks! Hehe, I'm quite excited to teach. I love dance, and always wanted to do more of it. Maybe someday soon.

This Wednesday I attended the Vancouver Screening of 2012 for the cast and crew here.
It was so nice to see the people who's hard work has made the film so great once again. It was a nice little outing at the Scotiabank theatre in Downtown Vancouver. I took Sylvia with me and we had quite a good time. The security was pretty tight but they gave us all popcorn and drinks courtesy of the studio. Sidenote: Popcorn doesn't taste better when it's free, but I sure ate a whole lot more of it.
One of the producers Larry gave a heartwarming speech at the beginning and we watched the film. The second time around I enjoyed it a lot more. Most likely due to the fact that I went to the bathroom prior to sitting down in the theatre, I was able to concentrate on the film and not when it was okay for me to go to the bathroom. Also glad that they had a showing in Vancouver, because I went with my friends opening night and the line up was insane. We came 2 and a half hours early to sold out theatres and ended up waiting an extra 4 hours for the 11pm showing. We ended up hanging out at our friend Ovey's rec room which was fun and warm (thank you warm).

Filming 2012 was definitely one of the best experiences of my life and it has open a lot of doors :)

Just got back from LA after attending the premiere of 2012 at the new Regal 14 theatre in Downtown LA. I had a blast! Watching the movie for the first time was everything I was expecting and more and the experience was amazing!
Of course the red carpet and the movie was just the beginning. The afterparty was star packed with John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Oliver Platt, Chin Han among the actors of 2012. Adam Lambert who sang the theme song was also present, as well as Lauren Graham of Gilmore Girls and Camilla Belle who worked with Roland on 10,000 BC with several other films coming out. I had the chance to meet Bryan Singer, the director of Superman Returns (love that movie). Of course Roland Emmerich, Ute Emmerich, Harold Closer, Volker Engel, Mark Gordon and Marc Weigert who put 2012 together. And then the dozens of people flying in from all over that I had the opportunity to work with on set behind the cameras who were able to attend and hang out. And a whole score of new faces that I had the joy of getting to know.
Halfway through the night we headed off to the after after party at a Penthouse nearby. The place filled up quick and they had several pairs of twins serving which was a little creepy at first. All in all the night was wonderful, had a good time and looking forward to next time.

First off, Happy Birthday to my older brother Seb, he turns 25 today. Another birthday, another reminder of my own mortality. That is a blessing in itself, both the fact and the reminder which motivates me to use my time wisely.
October is almost up and right now I am preparing for my trip down to LA early November. The premiere of 2012 is finally happening! Trailers look amazing, I've been anticipating this for a long time and now that's it's finally here.. well, I guess I'll just go there, have a great time, and enjoy my book on the plane. More on that after I get back!
Some new developments happening for next year. I'll keep you guys posted.
October 24th, 2009
Few days ago I answered a call looking for stunt guys and actors. It was for a 48 hour film competition, bloodshots. The premise is simple, you get 48 hours to produce a short, I'm assuming the general theme is blood, but they give you the sub genre and some elements to include the day of starting to keep people honest.
It's an all nighter script/planning process, 1 day of shooting, followed by another day of editing. Fortunately for me I was only participating in the 1 day of shooting, although sometime in the future I may want to participate with my own team. Mark Hemstock, the director/producer of our short pulled together a good team, with an impressive amount of equipment and operators for a no budget short. http://markhemstock.com/ you can check out his portfolio. He usually does corporate videos and stuff but wanted to have a little fun with this. I really liked seeing his past videos and enjoyed working with him.
The shoot was done at a capoeira studio beside Save on Meats on Hastings. If you're not from Vancouver, it's a fairly shady looking place with a pink neon flying pig for a sign. The neighbourhood is considered one of the worst in North America, but the shop is actually quite a normal grocery store inside. The film features a whole lot of capoeira practitioners, starring Lelo and Venetio Aurelio, the owners of Axe Capoeira there. The story was quickly put together to house a whole lot of action. Everything was quick as it had to be, but despite time constraints and comprosises that had to be made, what I've seen looks promising. Shots look good, stunts look great, acting is cheesy, perfect combo for an action thriller.
I helped out with a lot of the choreography and it felt really good to be in that mind set again. Putting together fight scenes is a good challenge for me and although I'm always learning about it, it gets a little easier and more gratifying every time I try. So I hope they'll be more opportunities for it in the future.
October 19th, 2009
So just when you lose hope there comes a shining light. With few auditions coming my way, and little much else I want to spend my time with, I have really been doing my homework in preparations for any opportunity coming my way.
And because I usually tend to disregard and forget a role or audition as soon as I leave the room, which is the way I deal with the rejection, which would be 99% of this career path, when I find out I have booked a role, I have no idea what exactly it was that I auditioned for until I take a few minutes to look up the part but am so pleasantly surprised to work on something.
Anyhow, the audition was for two different roles, but they've cut it down to one I found out after I read the script. And even though it's just a small principal role, I'm very excited to have the part, especially since there were so many people trying out for it, and usually those are the ones you write off immediately. It's for a nickelodeon TV movie, yay another nickelodeon project! I miss enjoying rugrats as a kid. The project is called "Best Player", featuring the stars of iCarly, Jennette McCurdy and Jerry Trainor. It's all about Cyber athletes, crazy mmorpgs and the insane competitiveness of them, and what people will do to be the best at it. Maybe one day I'll divulge my own stories..
October 10th, 2009
Well it's been a very slow year for me in terms of auditioning. It has started to pick up since the summer ended, by still, an audition every 2 weeks or so isn't much. That has not kept events from unfolding howerever, someone entered our house, while we had friends over for poker, and stole our camera, the Canon XH-A1, our prized possession, along with my roommate Koi's Laptop. This being the 2nd laptop he's had stolen from him in the last year. Just another wave of misfortune coming at us. Two weeks ago we had 3 cars broken into in front of house as well. So much for a safe and quiet Burnaby Suburb.
For now we just gotta keep smiling and hope for things to pick up. Premiere for 2012 is coming up soon, just did an interview with Reel West, so that should be a picker upper at the very least! Sure hope so anyways.
